Hardware Management with System Center Configuration Manager

System Center Configuration Manager In the second keynote at MMS today there was a cool demo from Dave Randal on how to control hardware with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager. For this to work you need the SP1 of Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager and the machines you want to manage need the new Intel processors with support for the new Intel Vpro technology.

This first thing that Dave showed was how to use the out of band Management console in Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager to control the power state of a machine. You can turn machines off and on. The second demo was even better, Dave showed how to configure the bios settings of a machine which was turned off. With the out of band Management you can do the following things:

  • Powering on one or many computers (for example, for maintenance on computers outside business hours).

  • Powering off one or many computers (for example, the operating system stops responding).
  • Restarting a nonfunctioning computer or booting from a locally connected device or known good boot image file.

  • Re-imaging a computer by booting from a boot image file that is located on the network or by using a PXE server.

  • Reconfiguring the BIOS settings on a selected computer (and bypassing the BIOS password if this is supported by the BIOS manufacturer).

  • Booting to a command-based operating system to run commands, repair utilities, or diagnostic applications (for example, upgrading the firmware or running a disk repair utility).

  • Configuring scheduled software update deployments and advertisements to wake up computers prior to running.

  • Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager SP1 is now in Beta and will be released May 2008. The R2 version of Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager will be RC at July 2008. The R2 version will have some additional new features like:

  • Application Virtualization

  • Integration with Microsoft Forefront

  • The reports are moved by customer request to reporting SQL Reporting Services

  • Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager R2 will be released Q3 of 2008.
