| January | MyDoom Leads Damaging Net Attacks Tagged by security firms as "the worst worm in history" at that moment, MyDoom created a backdoor to infected systems that an army of hackers quickly turned to its advantage to target the Microsoft website. |
| February | Windows Source Code Loose On The Net In February, Microsoft became aware that portions of the Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 source code were illegally made available on the Internet. Subsequent investigation showed this was not the result of any breach of Microsoft’s internal security. |
| March | EU Orders MS To Offer WMP free Windows Microsoft is to start shipping a cut-down version of Windows in Europe from January 2005, following the failure of its appeal to the European Court of First Instance over penalties imposed by the Commission in this month. |

| May | Hack Attempts At TechEd 2004 At the TechEd 2004 in the USA, hackers have continuously tried to sabotage Microsoft's wireless network. After 48 hours the network had more than 8000 hack attempts. |
| June | Microsoft announces Windows XP Starter Edition Microsoft leaks details of "Starter Edition" in June. Starter Edition is the name of an effort to deliver a tailored and localized Windows product to Thailand and Malaysia, as part of Microsofts efforts to enable access to technology. |
| July | Microsoft and Lindows Settle Trademark Case Lindows.com and Microsoft Corp. jointly announced in July that a worldwide settlement has been reached in the trademark infringement cases between the two companies. "This case was centered on the fundamentals of international trademark law and our necessary efforts to protect the Windows® trademark against infringement." |
| August | Windows XP Service Pack 2 In August, Microsoft announced the release of Windows® XP Service Pack 2 with Advanced Security Technologies. This free service pack delivers the latest security updates and innovations from Microsoft, establishes strong default security settings. |
| September | Microsoft Launches Virtual Servers 2005 As a key deliverable of the Dynamic Systems Initiative, Microsoft's vision for simplifying and automating the way customers design, deploy and operate distributed systems, Virtual Server 2005 provides customers with more flexibility and control in the provisioning of data center resources. |
| October | MSN Music Opens Its Doors Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates demonstrated MSN Music's features and content at an event in Los Angles today in conjunction with other new consumer technologies from Microsoft that create new digital entertainment experiences for the home and on the go. |
| November | MOM 2005 Launched At IT Forum Microsoft announced worldwide availability of MOM 2005. It is Microsoft's premier solution for event and performance management of the Windows Server System. |
