Windows XP 64-bit Edition: Only in OEM Flavor

Microsoft's upcoming 64-bit version of Windows XP, which is expected to debut later this year, might not please many users considering that the long-awaited 64-bit operating system might only be available to OEM resellers.

A group posting by Brian Marr, Microsoft's Windows XP 64-bit Product Manager, provided some details on the company's plans.
Windows XP 64-bit Edition's current Beta is very old and the software maker has currently suspended the Beta program for the new OS, said Marr. The company will release a new Beta software and launch the program after its SP2 for Windows XP 32-bit ships out.
The new OS will be part of Microsoft's MSDN and will also have Software Assurance, according to Marr. Windows XP 64-bit will be available on some OEM personal computers and will be distributed to OEM makers. Marr stated that whether to implement the company's 64-bit or not will depend on individual OEM PC makers.
The OS will be sold through system builders and distributors and users will be able to get it pre-installed with a new system, said Marr. He also reported that users who like to build their own computers will be able to purchase the OS with some sort of hardware. It could even be a mere cable.
He also posted that Redmond based company is working on a plan that would allow users to trade Windows XP 32-bit licenses for Windows XP 64-bit Edition.
