Last week I visited a session from Quest Software, they talked about their migration tools. Quest Software recently completes the acquisition of Aelite Software. Now there are two players on the market Quest Software and NetIQ.With the tools from Quest Software you can administer, report, recover, audit and migrate the Active Directory, Exchange and Windows environment. At the session they demonstrated the Domain Migration Wizard and Exhange Migration Wizard.
Domain Migration Wizard (DMW)
This is a tool to migrate the SAM to AD. Some key features:
- you can change the parameters of the user account.
- each step in the migration process is written to a database and can be reversed in case of errors or failures.
- SIDHistory values can be added and deleted in Active Directory to ensure access to resources as well as protect network security.
- Users’ passwords are migrated along with their accounts.
Exchange Migration Wizard (EMW)
This is a tool to migrate Exchange 5.5 to exchange 2003. Some key features:
- Directories, mailboxes, calendars, and public folders are continuously synchronized between the target and source Exchange organizations.
- Throughout migration processes, users can access their mailboxes at any time. During the migration, mail is automatically redirected to the mailbox in use, guaranteeing that messages are not lost and bandwidth is not wasted by delivering duplicate messages to each mailbox.
- Exchange Migration Wizard can be used in conjunction with Microsoft’s Active Directory Connector
- there is no need to make a trust from the NT domain to the AD forest.
- Scheduled data movements free the administrator’s time and allows data to be migrated during periods of low network traffic.
